SNOWMOBILE HELMETS – WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Safe, warm and comfortable. Those are the three things your snowmobile helmet should provide any rider. Available helmet styles and options seem to multiply nearly every season. How do you know which helmet best suits you? Let’s take a look at the variety of the variety of helmets and which snowmobile helmet might be best for you.
The lightest snowmobile helmet style in the industry, snocross-style helmets are typically worn by active riders. They are the most popular choice of helmets for mountain and backcountry riders. They are commonly seen on the snowmobile trail systems of the Midwest and eastern regions as well. These helmets are paired with goggles that fit snugly into the helmet opening keeping the elements out of a rider’s face. A proper goggle/helmet pairing will offer a rider fog-free vision for many hours on the snow. The snocross-style/goggle combination also gives the rider the ability to change goggle lenses depending on conditions and light.
Modular snowmobile helmets were a revelation when they were first introduced. They offer all the warmth and protection of a full face helmet but feature a removeable chin bar that lifts up exposing a rider’s face. This feature allows a snowmobiler to eat, drink and converse clearly without completely removing their helmet. As the modular helmet design has advanced, some have transformed into a dual-sport style like Ski-Doo’s Enduro helmet line blending certain performance-minded features of a snocross-style helmet with the protective warmth features of a full face helmet.
Full Face Helmets
The ultimate in warmth, full face snowmobile helmets are typically worn by riders who brave severe cold temperatures to get out and ride. They also are a very popular choice in helmet for trail riders because of the higher speeds. A full face helmet completely covers a rider’s head leaving nothing exposed when the shield is down. Although they are typically a heavier helmet, advancements in material such as Ski-Doo’s Oxygen Helmet made with M-Forge Technology have reduced weight and improved comfort greatly. They also feature options such as a heated shield, built-in sun visors, and rear-facing LED lights for added comfort and safety.
